What makes a hook actually work

A hook has one job: buy the next three seconds. It is not a summary and it is not a headline in the old sense. It is the moment where someone scrolling decides that stopping is cheaper than moving on. Four things do most of that work.

A curiosity gap. You open a loop the reader needs closed. "The pricing mistake that cost me my three best clients" tells you the shape of the answer without giving it away. The gap has to be honest — if the payoff does not land, the next hook from you gets ignored.

Specificity. Numbers, names, timeframes and exact situations beat adjectives every time. "Raise your rates" is a slogan. "How I went from $45 to $120 an hour without losing a client" is a story someone can picture themselves inside.

Tension. Something has to be at stake: a mistake being made right now, a belief being challenged, a deadline, a cost of doing nothing. A hook with no friction is just an announcement, and announcements do not stop thumbs.

One person. Write to a single reader, not an audience. Use "you", name their situation, and skip the qualifiers that make a line safe for everyone. The narrower the person you picture, the more the line sounds like it was written for whoever happens to be reading it.

Finally, front-load the tension. On TikTok and Instagram the first three or four words decide everything; in email it is the subject line before the truncation point. Write ten variations, read them aloud, and keep the ones that feel slightly uncomfortable to publish.

LaunchForge teaches the marketing move, then does the writing: emails, newsletters, sales video scripts, customer personas and full business plans. Built for solo businesses and small teams that handle their own marketing.
